Traveling to the more remote Hawaiian islands

Hawaii is a destination that some travelers dream about for years. For others, Hawaii is something they've seen and experienced from seemingly every angle. One way to keep Hawaii feeling fresh is to spend some time visiting the lesser known islands.

Lanai is a gorgeous island that is less touristy than some of the other locations in Hawaii. A trip to Lanai should include a visit to the Munro Trail. The Munro Trail is a seven mile stretch of dirt road that runs through the island, and also crosses Mount Lanaihale, the highest point on the island. Its worth renting a car and driving the trail just for the views alone.

Shipwreck Beach is another "must see" spot on Lanai. This eight miles stretch of beach was named for the large amount of boats and ships that wrecked there, and one of those shipwrecks is still on display. There's also gorgeous views, crystal clear waters, and hiking trails nearby. The beach almost has a deserted feel as well, since it is only accessible by vehicles with four wheel drive.

Molokai is another great island in Hawaii that is off the beaten path. Molokai has the highest bluffs and sea cliffs on the North Shore, which make for spectacular views that are not find anywhere else in the world. Kalaupapa National Historic Park is one of the only national parks found in Hawaii, and its right on Molokai. Adding a twist to your trip, the Park is not accessible by car. The only way to get there is to take a mule ride, or an airplane. It also has one of the highest sea cliffs in the world, and a 2.9 mile long trail with mule rides.

Or head out to Nihau Island in Hawaii. Nihau is a small island with a big history. It was once privately owned, but has since opened itself to the public. This is the kind of place where you can stand on the beach, and feel like you are the only person in the world. Nihau is also the smallest island in Hawaii. While there, you can hunt for local pupu shells on the beach, and enjoy a quiet and laid back atmosphere. There's not dozens of tourist spots here; it's a place for vacationers to unwind, and escape the hectic world.

On you next visit to Hawaii, try a few of the lesser known islands and experience gorgeous scenery and views like nowhere else.
