I've done my fair share of commuting. Whether it be long or short-haul, there's nothing like a good book to get you through those long hours. I'm not going to stick to a particular genre, as every woman will want a different thing. Instead I've tried to include a wide selection of genres to please all you ladies out there trying to wile away the minutes on your journey
1) Tales of the City Series by Amistad Maupin
Mary Ann Singleton is sick of Cleveland. She runs away to San Fransisco to make a new life for herself. Little did she know how complicated that life would be. This series of books is fast-paced and fun with characters that are easy to love. The stories of all the characters intertwine cleverly and before you know it everyone who was once so separate comes together to be one big, messed-up family. The chapters of these books are short so its a good one for shorter journeys.
2) Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov
Our hero, Viktor, wants to write short stories. But nobody wants to read short stories in Russia during the depression. So instead he writes obituaries. His only friend is his pet penguin, Misha. Viktor saved Misha from the zoo where he was starving, but now it's Misha's turn to save Viktor. This book is incredibly endearing without being too soppy, and is totally individual in its approach to life and death. And penguins. It is also quite short, which means it won't take up a lot of room in your handbag
3)I'm with the Band - Confessions of a Groupie by Pamela Des Barres
Like your gossip mags on your way to work? Then you'll love this memoir, probably the greatest kiss-and-tell ever written. Pamela grew up on the Sunset Strip and partied the night away with rock gods such as Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison and Jimmy Paige. She babysat for Frank Zappa, and started her own girl group, the G.T.O.s. Even if you don't approve of her rock 'n' roll lifestyle, you can't help but love her ditzy writing style and the affection with which she's portrays these people, the people who shaped the face of music today.
4)Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
I will admit that I was apprehensive when I was first recommended this book, as the style of Pratchett's writing never appealed to me. But after giving him a chance, I actually found it incredibly entertaining and engaging. Captain Vimes' 'unique' outlook on life is amusingly accurate. Carrot, the dwarf who is several feet too tall, writes letters home to his mother in the dwarf mines that will have you laughing
