What to look for when buying dolls for your tween girl

Buying dolls for tween girls is as varied as each girl of this age is herself. By the time a girl reaches the age of what is considered tween, she may or may not still play with dolls, depending on how much the girl was into dolls in the first place at a younger age.

There are a few sure bets for buying dolls for most girls between the ages of 9 and 11. These dolls usually fit into the collector category, but again, they are easily taken off of the shelf when the tween girl wants to re-visit younger childhood and just enjoy the fun of having a doll to dress, talk with, fix the hair, etc...

American Girl Dolls - These dolls are dolls that belong to a larger collection but are sturdy, lovable and easy to still play with. The preteen or for that matter teenager, can have her American Girl Doll in a favorite spot in her room dressed in an outfit that fits the girl's interest and decor of her room. She can take pride that this doll accentuates her style without feeling like she has a baby doll.

Madame Alexander Dolls - The smaller dolls are for the shelf, and are indeed fun to collect. Yes, they do get played with partly because their little accessories are irresistible to this age group. Madame Alexander features larger dolls as well, that like the American Girl doll serve two-fold, both as a collection addition and also a doll to dress occasionally and sometimes serve tea when a young lady wants to practice being more grown up. The larger dolls follow the Madame Alexander tradition and always feature a beloved character or person.

Collector Barbie's - Of course to the true collector, these must stay in a box, but for the tween girl, usually the Barbie will make her way onto the shelf and eventually to the average young Barbie collector, the Barbie will get to "try on" accessories during play at some point during a quiet afternoon.

Porcelain Dolls - Definitely for the shelf. This is an inexpensive hobby for girls who have bridged the gap between playing with dolls and looking at dolls. There are many kinds and characters and these come in all price ranges.

There are not too many girls who don't like at least some kind of doll. Whether it is more of a stuffed animal or robot or some sort of action figure. Almost every girl likes some sort of something they can play with. The trick to buying dolls of any kind for this age group is to find out the interest of the girl who you are buying for, and then enjoy the hunt. Usually the shopping is as much fun as the receiving, when it comes to dolls!
