The link between self harm and emo

Wow, how many times have i heard "emo kid" said in the past year or so. It is ridiculous since emo music isn't anything like what people think it is. Emo music could put bands like Braid, Brand New, The Get-up Kids, or Breaking Pangaea into a category, but bands like My Chemical Romance, Hawthorne Heights, and The Used are NOT emo. They could be considered a new age of Gothic or something of that sort, but not emo. Emo of course stands for emotional, and it shouldn't be confused with suicide. The first time emo was introduced to the world, it was in the form of feelings over a girlfriend, or mabye life itself. Not exactly self harm is it? If everyone knew what they should know about the music, being suicidal would never have been associated with the emo genre. Extreme sadness has nothing to do with being emo either, thats just extreme sadness. The emo genre was meant to connect more with todays society. Some people might really be down over loosing their girl, or maybe seeing how people today act, and how they can't see past their own problems to make time for anyone or anything else. Maybe the songs about corporate pigs and business leaders trying to break bands into playing something they don't want. Or maybe its about those same pigs worrying about nothing but money and work.

Emo music should never have been coincided with serious depression problems or self harm. It is one genre of respectful music with meaningful lyrics, not some evil music with intentions of driving people into even more self-doubt or crazyness. I hope someday that everyone who really understands the music scene understands this, if anything. This really has to be thrown out there, not to be confused with demonic and gothic style music. It got annoying after such a great amount of people who aren't very educated in music use the term "emo" more than they say their own name.
