Tips on buying home oxygen therapy equipment

These are equipped with oxygen saving devices that use only oxygen when you breathe in and temporarily shut off when you exhale. This is cost effective. This type of oxygen administration is also available in smaller cylinders with a shoulder stray that you can carry with you. The large tanks are home use.

Liquid Oxygen:

A "thermos" like container stores liquid oxygen. It turns into a gas when it is breathed in. The advantage of this system is that it is a more compact method of use. You can pour it into a smaller portable vessel at home. Price wise it costs more than compressed gas and it may not keep as long, as it vents' when not in use.

Oxygen Concentrator:

A device that is powered electrically that makes use of the surrounding air to extract concentrated oxygen and then stores it for future use. This is not as expensive an operation as compressed oxygen since it never needs to be re-supplied and it is cheaper than liquid oxygen.

Extra long tubing makes moving around easier and the person using this type of therapy is not confined to a certain location. The development of small portable systems is even more valuable. A word of caution: In case of electrical failure a cylinder of compressed oxygen must be nearby.
The way the oxygen is used is by way of nasal cannula, masks, or by way of a tube in the trachea. The most used method is the nasal cannula. A mask is used when a higher concentration of oxygen is needed. The trachea route is used when some sort of obstruction prevents the use of the other two means of administration.

The last tip. Absolutely no smoking while using oxygen. This is a well known caution but is often carelessly not observed. Stay at least five feet away from gas stoves or any fire source. Insist that everyone heed these warnings.
