Roleplaying games for comic relief

by Roran

Ah, roleplaying. The stereotype consists of D&D nerds dressed up as their characters (known as cosplaying, or, if you cross-dress to be a character, it's cross-play), holed up in someone's basement, World of Warcraft fanatics huddled in front of their souped up, ultra gamer's fantasy computer, the people looking to spice up their sex life ("Professor, there must be -something- I can do to get an 'A'...")...

But my roleplay (from here on in in true addict fashion referred to as RP) style of choice is much different, yet just as complex.

The only things required, are pen and paper, or, an on-line forum (where most of my RPing takes place now) for easy access.

That probably sounds completely ridiculous, but wait until I break it down for you. In this form, you can only rely on yourself and the other person (sometimes people) for plot, action, and all of those nice little, highly addictive hooks that keeps it interesting.

Each person creates anywhere from one to as-many-as-they-can-stand-to-c ontrol characters. Depending on what works best, you can start with a name and a basic idea of what they're going to look like, and you stick them in there and just see what happens, or you can plan things like personality, descriptions, and hell, if you feel like it, what religion, what degree (if the time period allows) they earned in college, what zodiac sign they were born under...The list is only limited by your interest and imagination. I personally go the first route, because even though I plan something out, it doesn't mean it happens that way.

Also depending on how you prefer to roll (no pun intended) is if you plan out your plot, or just go with the flow. Or, you can completely scrap the idea of using original characters (OCs), and borrow characters from stories such as Harry Potter and RP in their universe. It doesn't have to be sex if you don't want it to be, it doesn't have to have dragons if you don't want dragons, you have full control over the contents and events.

My most successful RP started in a half full spiral notebook with one of my best friends. We were bored out of our minds, and decided 'eh, why not?' Before this one, we had never had a successful one, i.e., lasts more than a few posts or pages, whichever comes first.

This was two summers ago.

To date, I have a stack of nineteen 70 page spirals (one of them admittedly, is a 120 page), but I believe she has the last one before we moved it to a forum (which would bring the tally up to 20 spirals), to better accommodate
