Reflections: Parents and children

This sucks!

Rachel sat at the dinner table scowling at her plate. It felt like everyone was always nit picking what she did. No one ever stopped to listen to what she had to say. Her parents would find something to yell at her about and then yell at her again when she tried to defend herself.

She sat silently at the table, her emotions churning violently within her. She was so angry she could feel her bones aching. Her fists tightened and her jaw clenched while her mind raced with frustrated thoughts. Uh! They were always picking at everything she did and scolding her. She wanted to yell and scream at them but she knew they wouldn't listen; they would only yell back in rebuke. Her eyes teared with frustration and her heart wanted to burst with desperate sobs. Her mind stubbornly pushed those thoughts down inside her to make space to dwell on belligerent hate.

They were chatting amongst themselves now, not caring how upset she felt. Not caring how they had antagonized her. Why did they always do this to her? Her empty stomach sent up a plea for food. Oh, how she wanted to eat, but no. She couldn't dismiss this insult. Her insides seethed with anger and frustration- she looked around searching for an outlet for these emotions. She looked at her fork and wanted to take it up and plunge it deep within something. Within her own hand. She wondered what their reaction would be. Would they jump up in shock and alarm? Would they even notice?

But she dismissed these thoughts and painfully pushed away from the table, her stomach still unsatisfied and uneasy, seeking the refuge of her room. Her anger and hate gave way to emptiness and sorrow. She entered the refuge with quiet tears streaming down her face. As the door shut behind her, the sobs became audible and her face became wrenched with painful emotions. She hated all this, the scoldings and arguments. Why couldn't they just let her be? She flung herself onto the bed and buried her face in the pillow as crying violently overtook her body. She wanted everything to be different. She wanted love, joy, peace and happiness. And she wanted to stop being so stupid and doing such dumb things. But mostly right now she just wanted to be held and for her heart to be healed.
