Sure, everyone knows and assumes they are going to put on weight when they become pregnant. After all, you've got a whole another person growing in there. Unfortunately, especially if your pregnancy is similar to mine, the "whole another person" wasn't born ready to attend kindergarten...as my weight gain would've suggested.
When I first became pregnant, my doctor told me it would be normal to gain 25-30 lbs during the entirety of the pregnancy. He also told me (after the third visit), that it wasn't a race to see how fast you could gain the weight...but if it were, I would've for sure have been the winner with a new record! (Sigh) I felt so fat and miserable....
I weighed 145 lbs when I became pregnant with my first child. I was 21 years old and appearance seemed to mean everything at that age! Even at 145 I looked fit and easily fit into a size 8. I felt really good about myself, and I felt really good when I became pregnant. I was soooo excited to become a mother!
The first trimester was the hardest to control the weight in...I suffered from morning sickness morning, noon, and night. So if I wasn't burying my face in the toilet, I was eating anything and everything I could find for two reasons. One, my stomach growling seemed to encourage the nauseous feeling, and two, I was worried with all the puking I was doing that my new little hitchhiker wasn't getting the nutrients she needed. As it turns out, according to the Dr, she was getting plenty...so many in fact that my body had enough left over to store (i believe he looked at my thighs as he made that comment). I had literally gained twenty-two pounds in the first trimester!
The second trimester started out a little easier. Weight gain slowed as the morning sickness eased up and as my carry-on-luggage grew and stifled the room I had to cram food into my stomach. Toward the end of my second trimester though, people started giving me wide girths when walking by them...like I might sneeze and have a baby all over them. Not a pleasant thought for passer-byers I imagine. Some of them would even be polite and ask when I was due, when I'd tell them I was a good 13 weeks away from delivery I'd get all sorts of looks, usually followed by some question as to how many babies might be in there...guesses always generated a number more than one, and sometimes less than four. For a new mother, having heard all the horror stories about delivery and unknown twins...I didn't sleep well at night after these particular encounters
