How to prepare and promote your sample clips for freelance writing

Creating a portfolio is absolutely the first step to becoming a paid freelance writer. Even an act like writing here on Helium can contribute to a portfolio. To make that leap to becoming a paid freelancer, however, requires a bit more dedication than the occasional post to Helium. First, you must start off small, finding companies interested in publishing your work, even if it is unpaid. Once you have had an article in print, it is much easier to persuade a magazine that you are fit to write an article for them. It generally takes about three published articles before a magazine or a web site will commission you, that is, pay you up front before writing an article. Check out www.ifreelance.com, where you can find hundreds of freelance job postings, and you can be well on your way to building a freelancing portfolio!
