If you currently program in a legacy version of Visual Basic, such as Visual Basic 6.0 or earlier, you should strongly consider using VB.NET for your next new project. By choosing VB.NET, you can leverage the .NET Framework, which includes a large number of libraries. Although there have been some changes to the Visual Basic language, features such as Intellisense make VB.NET easy to learn.
If you are a Web site developer, you should consider using VB.NET to build ASP.NET applications. You can build an ASP.NET application inside Visual Studio, using the toolbox and dragging controls onto a page. Client-side script and HTML can also be added to the page. However, the real power is in the code-behind file. The code-behind file contains Visual Basic code that is compiled and executed on the server. The server provides HTML to the Web browser, making it easy to build powerful Web applications that can run in any browser.
This doesn't mean that VB.NET is for everyone. If you currently develop in C++ or Java, you might feel more comfortable learning C#. Like VB.NET, C# is compatible with the Common Language Runtime (CLR) and can be used to write .NET Windows applications and ASP.NET Web applciations.
