Ways to save energy this winter

by Pittan

I think saving energy should not be confined to winter only. It should be a habit we practice all the time, whatever the season or time of the year may be. Over the years I have become very conscious of saving energy and doing my part for the environment. I even have blog on environmental issues (http://www.pittan.wordpress.c om).

There are several things one can do to save energy:

1. Reduce the temperature control (thermostat) by 1 degree or 2 degrees. Our body won't be able to detect the difference in temperature but it would make a big difference in the amount of energy used.
2. Keep ironing to the minimum and if you have to iron then iron several of your clothes at one time rather then one or two at a time.
3. Keep windows and doors shut when heating is on. It takes one hour to warm up a room and only 20 minutes to lose all the heat if the window or door is opened.
4. Wear proper clothings during winter time even when indoors so you don't have to put the heating on for too long.
5. Turn off lights in rooms that are not in use. Better still, don't the lights on if you can manage without the lights. More often than not we turn light on just out of habit rather than need.
6. If it is sunny for a few hours draw the curtains and let the sunlight in. You can warm your room by 'greenhouse effect'.
7. Use a convection heater to warm up a small area of your home like the living room or bedroom if you are the only one in. You don't need to turn on the central heating if you are not using the rest of the house.

There are 100's of ways to save energy we care to stop and think and are willing to make it a habit. The best thing of all is you get a reduced energy bill at the end of the month.
