"Street Smart v's Book Smart"? Read this line like it's a revolution, because the growing percentage of walking degrees and diplomas is phenominal, competition within the job market isn't just about having a diploma, it is about the person you are, experiences you have taken and shared and your knowledge. A good education can provide you with the intelligence that you need to survive, maybe get you into a cushy job that requires clearance, and provides you with a snazzy tag that has your photo on it, something I'm sure would make even the less tech savvy feel of such importance, like they might actually be contributing something by and large to the company, but, that job comes with a price tag, unpaid overtime, and you're still left with the same leave entitlements as the whote kit and caboodle! Work/Life Balance? What's that when you have a good education, a job you like, but no time for yourself and family!?
In short, a good education can:
- get you a job, but not necessarily the one you've been labourously examined on
- provide you with a foot in the door, which doesn't mean you are going to get the job, or that you are even fit for the job anyway
- can give you a job that you're overqualified for, but none the less, will give you a job so that you can make some sort of living
- will give you the job that you want, at a lower wage with unpaid overtime, long hours, weekends...
Maybe once upon a time, education was a trademark on people's resume's, even now, depending on what jobs one is applying for, but unless you make the graduate cut, you have one hell of a ride ahead of you. A good education can take you places, but, so can none at all, so take your pick.
