expressly against the death penalty.
As a spiritual and patriotic man Ron Paul recognizes the importance of religion, national pride and law as well as their limited roles in our society. He has voted YES on protecting the Pledge of Allegiance and voted NO on allowing Courts to decide on the propriety of the word "God" within it, leaving it open for culture and community to decide. Ron Paul is certainly no evangelist either, in November 2001 he voted NO on allowing school prayer during the War on Terror.
Ron Paul is also a friend to the Second Amendment. He is in favor of the law-abiding citizen's right to carry concealed firearms while also having a record that shows he has voted against prohibitions on lawsuits against gun sellers and manufacturers for product misuse. He is also voted against shortening the 3-day waiting period on purchasing firearms.
Paul parts ways with his party on many issues and this is what makes him attractive to disillusioned Democrats and third-parties. In September 2004 and July 2006 Paul voted against a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. He has spoken out in favor of relaxed drug laws, medical marijuana and legalization of industrial hemp. But Ron Paul has gone against he party's grain in far more significant veins. Despite having a fairly pro-oil voting record, in 2003 and 2004 he repeatedly voted against the Bush and Cheney energy policies and has expressed the need to repeal the gas tax.
As a former Libertarian, Ron Paul diverges from his current Republican Party most dramatically on the War on Terror, the Iraq War and most of the post 9-11 political and media perceptions and behaviors. On multiple occasions Paul has asserted the unconstitutionality of the war in Iraq without a Congressional Declaration of War. In 2005 he voted against making the Patriot Act permanent and he has consistently voiced his position to bring the troops home from Iraq, a sentiment he seems to share with 70 percent of the American people. In the age of terror Congressman Paul is convinced that securing the United States-Mexican border is a far greater priority than securing the borders of Iraq.
Ron Paul is also an opponent against government overspending and taxation. He has repeatedly spoken out in favor of abolishing the I.R.S. and the Federal Reserve Bank as unconstitutional and therefore illegal organizations which are responsible for the cost of inflation and debt.
