Hunting is both a sport and legitimate. I hunt. I eat what I kill and I never kill just to take a trophy. Hunting is a skill that we should not lose. Hunting is not cruel and is a legitimate way to control animal population and provide food for those that do not have money. The sport of hunting is misunderstood by those that live in nice little civilized bubbles where food magically appears in the supermarket.
Hunting is part of our cultural heritage. Not only does it provide the skills necessary for survival in extreme circumstances it also provides the hunter with an appreciation of nature that one does not get by sitting on the couch watching "Animal Planet".
Hunters are some of the most environmentally responsible people in the United States. Hunters have donated land to conservation departments in many states to make sure that there is always sufficient habitat for animals and hunting. Bird hunters and gun clubs routinely donate money to improve habitat and encourage wildlife populations. Hunters in my state can and do donate large parts of their deer hunt harvest to local food banks to provide food for the poor. What better way to control animal population and provide a public service at the same time.
It is natural for prey animals to be hunted. Man is by far the least cruel hunter in the natural world. Anyone that has seen a cat play with a live animal or seen large prey taken down by packs of wild animals understands that nature is far more cruel than any human hunter. In nature their is almost never a peaceful death it is nearly always violent with older animals losing the ability to escape predators and being run down. PETA extremists will equate killing an animal during a hunt with murder. This is wrong on two counts first that point of view puts animals rights above humans as animals can kill for food but humans can't and equates killing an animal with killing a human. Hunting done properly is a humane way to control animal populations.
When I was growing up in a rural community there were times that much of what we ate was provided by either hunting or fishing. That is no longer necessary for me but I still know people that hunt to eat, because they are barely making enough money to get by. For these people hunting is both a very natural thing and a necessity.
We should understand that hunting can be enjoyable, provide food, and control the population of animals. For a variety of reasons animal populations need to be controlled. Animals now have access to agricultural crops and other human produce that they never had prior to human settlement of natural areas. The extra food along with fewer predators means that in some cases populations of wild animals are higher in some areas now than before human settlement of those areas.
For all of the reasons outlined above hunting should be considered not only a legitimate sport but encouraged as a way to help people understand nature and their place in it. Responsible hunters give much more back to the land and society than they take
