Recently I saw an ad for a new birth control pill called Yaz.com. I thought to myself "Brilliant!". And I am not being sarcastic. Even though, I don't even use birth control pills, I guarantee you that Yaz.com would be the one that I would choose for the simple reason that I can remember it. All those progesterone, depno-thera ... blah, blah, blah turns into a gooey, glob of soon-forgotten scientific mumbo-jumbo.
Yaz.com (even though a birth control pill isn't a website), still gives me all the information I need (in its six short, pizazz-ee letters) to find my way there and become a customer. That, my friend, is a great domain name.
Of course, it's extremely important to understand that the commercial didn't hurt either. It reinforced what the product was and indelibly branded the unforgettable Yaz.com to it. That is effective advertising. A+ Yaz.com!
Here is a short list of 10 ways to help you choose the best domain name possible:
1. How are you going to advertise your site name? Yaz.com without the commercial would have been useless. You want to create an unforgettable bond between name and product.
2. Is it easy to remember?
3. Is it super easy to spell? Don't loose half your customers to a hard-to-spell name.
4. Depending on your marketing strategy, you might want to include exactly what you do in the title (example pooperscoopers.com).
5. If you are local, include the city, state or area code in the title (example: pooperscoopers917.com).
6. Always, always, always register with a .com suffix. I've worked 12 years in the Internet Marketing business and people don't remember anything but .coms. If it's not available, keep your thinking cap on and choose another name.
7. If possible, buy the .nets, .org, .biz and any other suffix to your name so that you can point or forward your customers to your home site - even if they type in the incorrect ending.
8. Also, try to think and purchase any other possible spellings of your website (ex. pooperscooper917.com - notice the singular spelling?). It prevents them from going to your competition by accident.
9. Always, keep the search engines in mind when choosing a name. You want to be as close to the top as possible. For instance, if you are in the Top 20 names of a Google search, most businesses will see an incredible increase of Internet site activity - sometimes over 1000% within a month. And don't forget the local searches either. The easier you are to find, the more customers you will get. So give your Internet customers a break and make it easy on them to find you.
10. Finally, why not follow Yaz.com's example and make it fun, unique, memorable and brand the name to your product so well that it is impossible to forget.
Yaz.com will always be "the" birth control pill of choice for me - just because of the incredible job they did choosing the name and branding the product to it. It seems so simple now ...
