learners.
- Music- Often auditory learners can develop proper cadence by timing their movements to the beat of music.
- Cues- This is also a strategy that can be used for visual learners. This is a method where you connect something unfamiliar with something more familiar. For instance: if you are trying to get your athlete to lock their lower back in its correct curvature, telling them to do this will most likely confuse them. If you tell your athlete, "Don't Slouch, Chest Out," this will often help them place their torso in the correct position. Another example would be "Paw the ground" to get them to perform the correct leg movement.
Kinesthetic Learners:
- Often these types of learners have to try things for themselves. They employ the trial and error method. It is important to provide feedback so that progress is made.
- To teach using this method a technique might be to physically manipulate your athlete so they are performing the correct motion. For instance: If you are trying to create the proper arm movement, you would manipulate their arm for them by placing their arm in the correct position and moving it through the proper range of motion.
- Drills that exaggerate the movements used in running are also helpful for these types of learners. Drills such as high knees, butt kicks, or other running form drills will help these athletes learn the proper running technique.
There are many other techniques that can be used to teach proper running technique to children. Often, many children are more concerned with having fun and moving their bodies than they are with winning. Make sure that you are motivating them properly. Keep a positive attitude when you are coaching your children. Remember that your primary role is not as a coach but as a teacher. This will help you achieve the best results.
Make sure that your technique is progressive. Start with something basic and then progress. Try not to overload your athlete with information. Work on one thing at a time. Often fixing one thing will fix others. Learning is a process; you may not see results immediately. Be patient and have fun!
