due to bone structure and anatomical differences in the elbow. The motion in the frontal plane (side to side) should be limited. The hand should never cross the midpoint of the body.
The Core (Torso):
- When running the torso should lean forward slightly.
- It is important that the runner lock their lumbar spine in its normal curvature. Slouching can lead to lower back pain and injuries.
- It is important to keep the shoulder girdle and the neck relaxed while running. Being tense in these areas can lead to upper extremity fatigue and/or injuries to the shoulder.
Now that you have established what proper running form is. Now it is time to become the teacher. Individuals have diverse learning styles. Some people learn best by observing others (visual learners). Others learn best by reading or listening to instructions (auditory learners). Some individuals can only learn by doing something (kinesthetic learners). It is important to determine which strategy will be most effective for teaching your child. In most cases, individuals favor one style of learning, but are capable of learning in any of these ways. Therefore, it is often the best strategy to use multiple modalities. Here are some examples of methods that address these different modalities.
Visual Learners:
- Demonstrations- If you want your athlete to learn how to use proper arm swing motions, and then demonstrate to them the proper arm movements.
- Video Tape- Showing your athlete video of themselves running and pointing out something that they are doing correct will help reinforce that behavior. It is important to do this first before pointing out areas for improvement. Don't just tell them they are doing something wrong. Tell them what they should be doing to do it correctly. Maybe demonstrate the correct movement.
- Watch Others- If other people are present have them demonstrate and point the behaviors you want your athlete to exhibit. It is important to use a subject that your athlete can relate to. For example: If you have a young female athlete, do not use a professional male athlete as your example. Instead use another young female athlete.
- Pictures- Still frames are sometimes better for creating understanding. Pictures are often a more effective tool than video because athletes can see exactly what is wrong and at what point in the sequence of movement this is occurring.
Auditory Learners:
- Instruction- Explaining to your athlete the correct motion and the correct technique might work well for auditory
