arrangements, took a week off work, and stayed with him through the funeral. I helped him come up to speed with his finances because Cissy did all of that. Dad and I spent a lot of time together over the next few months. He did start drinking again. It wasn't as bad as before. He was responsible about his behavior. He asked for a ride if he had too much and he didn't drink alone at home. A couple years passed and he dated a few ladies. He remarried again to Linda. I think it was a marriage for two lonely people. I think they rushed into it but whatever made him happy made me happy.
We accepted Linda into our lives and life went on. You could say this is comeback number two.
On my 33rd birthday, Linda called me and let me know dad was in the hospital. He suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side. He went through physical therapy for the next 4 months and regained partial mobility and could walk with a cane and drive again. The following spring, dad actually played golf again. He had to change his swing a little but he recovered from the stroke and began to enjoy himself again. I chalk that up to comeback number three.
I was 37 when dad called me and told me about the sore on his foot. He went to the doctor and had x-rays and tests and they told him he was diabetic. The sore on his foot had infection down to the bone and they didn't know quite what to do with it. They saw him weekly for 3 months and it was getting worse. The specialists at the VA Hospital told him the sore was a result of an arterial blockage in his leg and he had 2 choices. He could opt for an arterial bypass in his leg or have the foot amputated. Naturally he opted for the surgery and we took him to the VA early one morning. The incision started at his groin and went all the way down to his ankle. The surgery was a success and he began his recuperation once again.
While in the hospital, he complained he was having trouble swallowing food. The doctors wanted his leg to heal a bit before they began researching any further problems. A week later they found cancer cells in a ring around his esophagus. Cancer? After all he had been through he has cancer? According to him, God was punishing him for being a bad father and a bad person. I told him God isn't punishing him but testing him. Maybe God is testing your will to live, or testing you to see what kind of person you can become. I told him God was watching over him through his trials and everything would work out in the end.
