Teaching children how to read and write at preschool age is an extremely easy and simple process. Our job as parents, guardians, educators, health care professionals or anyone else that is in contact with young children is to provide the correct stimuli to allow this process to happen.
As a trained Montessori teacher I have witnessed this first hand. I have worked with children with all levels of academic abilities from very high functioning to children with severe learning difficulties and with through my experience I can confirm that every child has one quality in common... the innate desire and ability to learn.
The first thing we need to consider is when to start the process? The simple reality is it is never too early to begin educating our children. Many studies have shown children form relationships and recognition towards music they are subjected to within the womb so from the moment of conception nurture your child with words allow them to become comfortable with the spoken language.
Upon arrival into the world expand on this basis with your child repeatedly inform the child of the names of everything they come into contact with allow their mind to absorb this information, although in the beginning it may seem a pointless exercise as your only given response is a goo or a gaga you need to understand they are retaining information and unless you provide them the opportunity you are reducing their access to this knowledge.
Through simple activities such as story time, word games or nursery rhymes you allow yourself to make learning fun. Always start off simple with basic books e.g. colors or familiar objects things they can associate with and progress with the child's rate, in your nursery rhymes include actions allow the child to become involved on every level possible. Use these tools in daily routines like walks, bath time, bedtime, circle time allowing learning to be natural. Avail of every given opportunity to interact with your child.
Encourage art on all levels with the child include activities such as play-dough, finger painting puzzles, coloring, sand/water-play, there is an endless list of activities for you and your child to participate in and these activities are not only fun they also develop sensory and motor skills required for writing.
Invest good time into choosing a preschool for your child make sure it is going to be adequate for their individual needs. When choosing a preschool look at a multitude of factors
