Travelling by bus may be a cheaper experience than a plane ride, but it is certainly not more comfortable. So to try to make it a better experience I'd suggest the following ideas.
1) Bring a small neck pillow. It's certainly no fun to travel with a cramped neck. Not to mention getting rest will be easier, and if you're on the road for awhile sleep will be pretty important, so you're not too cranky when you reach your final destination.
2) Entertainment: If you don't tend to get eye strain while reading and riding bring a sudoku or crossword book, or maybe a latest novel you never seem to have time to read. If you do get eye strain you can bring a portable CD player for some tunes. Other good ideas are handheld poker games, madlibs, or a laptop to play on or watch a movie - don't forget the headphones as to not be rude.
3) Pack lightly, especially if you know you'll be changing buses. It'll be more convenient than lugging around a lot of bags. You'll thank yourself later.
4) Snacks are always a good thing to have handy. Carry a bottled water and maybe some crackers, bagged carrots, cookies, a sandwich. Just something to give you an extra boost during your travels.
5) Try to grab a front seat, especially if you tend to get motion sickness. The front of the bus is a little less shaky and that will help with keeping your system calm. If ever you do feel car sick look into the distance this should help, and pop out that bottled water & some crackers!
Allow yourself to leave with a good attitude and if ever you feel discouraged think about your destination and how wonderful it will be to get there! Life is an adventure, even if it's as simple as a bus trip. Maybe get to know your neighbor. Take in the scenery. Just enjoy yourself the best you can!
