"I'm John Taylor. I work in the Nightside-the gaudy, neon noir, secret heart of London, where it's always three in the morning, where gods and monsters make deals and seek pleasures they won't find anywhere else." Yes, that was a quote by the great John Taylor who is the main character of Simon R. Green's "Nightside" series. Simon R. Green is a very talented and well respected writer. He has had many great series, which include: The "Twilight of the Emperor" series, the "Deathstalker" series, the "Hawks and Fisher" series, the "Forest Kingdom" series, and the "Secret History" series. He is also father to several individual titles such as: "Shadows Fall", "Drinking Midnight Wine", and "Robin Hood Prince of Thieves". But, in my opinion, the most memorable and most creative of all Mr. Green's masterpieces are the "Nightside" books.
The "Nightside" series tails a very smooth and clever private eye by the name of John Taylor. He is much more than meets the eye. Taylor says himself that he wouldn't know a clue if it bit him on the nose. Then how is he a well respected and feared private detective you ask? The answer is simple, he has a gift for finding things. Being a child of the Nightside, Taylor is born with a supernatural gift. He is not the only one, almost everyone else in the Nightside has gifts that are either as strong as his or more. Taylor left the Nightside five years ago with his "skin and sanity barely intact". He swore that he would never return, but a current missing persons case forced him to return home. A kid's life was in danger and John Taylor was her only hope.
After this case, Taylor returned to the Nightside, for good. The first three books follow individual story lines, but they are tied together with one very mysterious question: Who is John Taylor's mother? All we know is that the answer to that question lies in the fate of the human race. If and when Taylor finds his long lost mother, he will also be finding a key to the Apocalypse.
The next three books follow a war that nearly destroys the entire Nightside, and the entire planet. John Taylor is not your regular private eye. Not only does he wield that marvelous gift of his, but inside him lies a prophecy. A prophecy which he can not defeat, as much as he tries. Or can he?
Simon Green has one other book out and two more additions to the series on their way. Also, he has published four short stories which expand the tale of the Nightside. This series is dark, funny, and leaves you shocked at each turn of the page. If you read any supernatural mystery novels, make them all seven books of the "Nightside".
