If I am made in the image and likeness of God, why are my choices not always a reflection of the choices God would make? I have been given the freedom to choose right from wrong. Yet I feel as if I am a slave to my wrong choices. Why? It is my free will that makes me a likeness of God. But it is my free will that exposes me to temptation. This is where the Tempter finds his way into my life. This is where he subtly tries to convince me to leave God one day at a time. He has tactics that I must fight against.

Desensitization

Sometim es, I stare numbly at my television. Nothing seems to shock me. I have seen the film footage from the death camps of Word War II. I have seen bull dozers push emaciated dead bodies into massive, unmarked graves. I am horrified at the way these people were stripped of their human dignity. After seeing this horror, I am able to ignore the hungry man who begs for money at a local street corner. Because of the horrors I have seen on television, in the movies and in books, magazines and newspapers, I have become numb and insensitive to the suffering of the people I encounter every day. My personal comfort is too important to risk by helping others. I choose to drive past the man on the corner rather than to feed the hungry. I can defeat this temptation through prayer. When I pray, the Holy Spirit provides me with wisdom, understanding, knowledge and right judgment. With these gifts, I am able to walk away from the things that will desensitize me.

Confusion

Truth and goodness seem to be relative rather than concrete. I know that it is my responsibility to feed my children. I do the best I can to provide them with a balanced diet. Yet I can see that there are children in my world who have no homes, no food, and nobody to hold them when they cry. The Tempter reminds me that my children are my gift from God. This is true. It's easy to forget that my hungry neighbor is my responsibility too. I am confused and I choose between my responsibilities. Not only do I choose to ignore the cries of the hungry; but I teach my children to do the same. When I pray, the Holy Spirit provides me with wisdom, understanding and piety. With these gifts, I can discern what is important and react in a holy way.

Lies and half truths

The Tempter toys with truth and goodness. I am flooded with visual and auditory lies. Television and movies tell me that God is not real. The world tells me that there are many paths that lead to the same destination. The media tells me that
