Thoughts on food and beverages

As a frequent buyer of Totinos frozen pizzas, I was shocked to see that once again another product that I normally buy is now being recalled. It seems that ever since that Spinach recall a few years back that more and more food recalls are taking place. From veggies to pet food to peanut butter to frozen pizzas, nothing seems safe anymore.

General Mills owns both Totino's and Jeno's brands of frozen pizza. Apparently 414,000 cases containing twelve pizzas each have been recalled. Many of which have already been consumed or are sitting in a freezer in someone's home somewhere.

The pepperoni on the pizzas had to be investigated after 21 E. coli-related illnesses were reported in 10 states. Nine of the 21 sick people indicated that they had eaten Totino's or Jeno's brands sometime before becoming ill.

None of the people had the packages handy to help the investigation narrow down which specific batches of the products had been contaminated. The recall includes eight different types of Totino's frozen pizzas and three types of Jeno's brand pizzas. All the frozen pizzas were pepperoni or contained pepperoni in combination with other pizza toppings.

Each of the ill people became sick between July 20, 2007 and October 10, 2007. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service has said that all the patients have luckily recovered.

All of the pizzas were made in Wellston, Ohio. The plant distributes all over the United States. They are currently still making pizzas but without the pepperoni toppings.

So please beware, buyers of Totino's and Jeno's pizzas. If you have bought their products with pepperoni toppings and still have them in your freezer - get rid of them!

Am I the only person who is fed up with all the food recalls? I can't be the only one. With everything being recalled these days its almost a wonder how any of us eat and survive. We can't feed our pets because their food is contaminated, we can't feed ourselves, and we can't even feed our own children with plastic bottles because they have potential harm too.

Plus all these recalls are a big fat waste of money. It puts a dent in consumer's pockets when they can not even eat the food that they have bought at the store.

Shouldn't all of these products be tested before being placed on the market for consumers? It takes an enormous outbreak of illnesses before products are taken out of stores and to me, it's ridiculous.

Let's get it together, America.
