I know there are lots of you out there who feel Christmas has been lost to commercialization. We skip right over Thanksgiving, because the only money to be made by businesses,is from the buying of food.
I believe that for the most part, we have forgotten what Christmas is really about. It's not about expensive gifts! It's not about buying our children a bunch of presents, then hoping they'll like what we bought. I've seen people plunking down hundreds of dollars at the cashiers line! Some are maxing out their credit cards for the Christmas season. Is it all worth the worry of wondering if your gift or gifts are going to be liked?
Christmas is about the birth of Jesus. When we think about him,we remember what he stood for. What he tried to teach us.Jesus was born in a manger, not a house! We should remember the children out there who have no home,no family.Orphans.We should remember the parent or parents out there who can't even afford to put food on the table.Try to put yourself in their shoes.Imagine how they feel.Especially at this time of year.
All you see on tv at Christmas time is "buy this, buy that".I've seen parents get into fights over certain toys! Usually,it's over the latest toy.Their afraid this "HOT" item won't be on the shelves long.Is this what Christmas is all about? It shouldn't be.
The 3 kings brought Jesus gifts.Gifts that weren't toys. They knew how important the birth of baby Jesus was. These gifts were to show humble respect. These gifts, though unbelievable these days, were very valuable. They were so valuable, that they were only given to the very few.To a king!
I think we need to start getting back to understanding what Christmas is all about. It's about faith, charity, and love. Not gifts! Why do I have the feeling this is never going to happen?
