Essays: Parents

I am 25 years old and while that may not be old, it's old enough to have learned a few lessons in my lifetime. For the longest time I used to think that my parents were the meanest people alive. I thought that the rules that they set for me were completely unfair and that my parents only wanted to control me.

Then about two years ago, i learned that my parents really were not the monsters that I made them out to be. Actually if I am going to be honest, my parents were actually ninety nine percent right about everything that they tried to teach me.

They gave me curfews, not because they didn't trust me but because they knew that I was not ready to do the things my older friends were doing. now you might be asking, what could have possibly changed my opinion?

That's easy enough to answer, I became a parent myself. My oldest daughter is two years old and my youngest daughter is one year old and already I am starting to learn that what rules my parents gave me, they gave to prepare me for adulthood.

I now know how my parents must have felt, I am constantly worrying about my daughters safety. They are not even old enough to play outside with there friends yet and I am already setting rules for them that they don't like and believe me they are not shy about letting me know.

Pretty soon it will be my children telling me how unfair I am being, when truly the only thing that any parent wants, is to make sure that their child leads a safe, healthy, happy life and gets to enjoy old age and children of their own.
