A brief history of the Olympics

The first ever Olympic Games were held in Greece literally more than 2,500 years ago. The Olympics began in 776 B.C. and the only event was a footrace. Later on the Greeks added Boxing, Wrestling, Chariot Racing, and the Pentathlon which contains five different events. The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years. In 393 A.D. a Roman Emperor stopped the Olympic Games but it's not certain as to why he stopped them. The Olympic Games were then brought back by a French Educator that went by the name of Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Here is a short timeline of some of the most notable Olympic History Moments:

1896- The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A myriad of 312 athletes from 13 different nations competed in as much as nine different sports.

1900- Women starting competing in the Olympics for the first time ever.

1908- Medals came into the Olympics to be awarded to the first three people to finish each event. Gold for first, Silver for second, and Bronze for third.

1920- The Olympic Flag was raised for the first time ever and the Olympics Oath was introduced.

1924- The Winter Olympics featuring Skiing and Skating events were held for the first time. Not only that but the Olympic Flame was also introduced at the Olympic Games.

1994- Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics the Winter and Summer Games have been held two years apart instead of in the same year.
