The question "Should teachers be held accountable for low student test scores?" can be summed up in one word, yes. Test scores are not just a reflection of a child's ability to learn, but of the educators ability to teach. Though it is true that both sides play a vital role, the teacher has the greater responsibility of making the child/children want to learn. Without a desire for knowledge (general awareness or possession of information, facts, ideas, truths, or principles) or a hunger for all that can be known, children fail to realize why the attend school.
For several months now I have pondered the idea of becoming a teacher, more specifically a biology or chemistry teacher. I love helping children and know from experience what a bad teacher can do. Not only will a child's grades suffer, but their self-esteem will diminish. Plus, as the child ages that lowered self-esteem can lead to depression (a psychiatric disorder showing symptoms such as persistent feelings of hopelessness, dejection, poor concentration, lack of energy, inability to sleep, and, sometimes, suicidal tendencies) and other unfortunate consequences.
In conclusion, I partially agree with Arthur Gibson who stated "The accountability issue for low student test scores should be shared equally by teachers, administrators, school system, parents, and the students themselves." There are many factors that go into the equation as to where the blame should fall, but ultimately it is still the "proud" teacher, the "grand" educator's responsibility and duty to better prepare and aid children in the learning process. Therefore the question "Should teachers be held accountable for low student test scores?" can be answered with a simple, yes.
