Ending animal homelessness starts in the home before the animals become homeless. Poverty, unemployment, George Bush...all causes that are linked to the alarming rate at which once loved pets become homeless streetwalkers.
Poverty:
As with humans, poverty is a direct and most associated link to homelessness for animals. Poor animals are frequently unable to pay for housing, food, kitten/puppy care, health care and proper education. When resources are limited animals have to make difficult choices in terms of appropriating funds. When you are on the poverty line you are one illness, accident or chewed shoe from being homeless.
Two major factors in homelessness among animals are: eroding employment opportunities for animals and a decline in actual aid and resources for animals. Many animals point to organizations that say they are fighting for animal welfare reform but are instead diverting funds away from direct assistance to other programs such as bobbleheads of Colonel Sanders and glamorous photo shoots for what one homeless cat called "vain human woman who care more about their own image than our plight."
George "W" also plays a role in this. As President he has cut funding allocated to animal education by 248% during his presidency all the while lining the fur of corporate "fat cats."
Employment:
PETA's campaign's of assaulting major animal employer's such as PT Barnum's, Ringling Brothers, PetCo, etc have actually led to a sharp decline in animal employment and income.
One disgruntled dog, who performed tricks at a local pet store for 3 years until let go due to PETA strong arming, told us "Ruff, Ruff...PETA sucks...Bow Wow Wow Yippy Yo Yippy Yea."
Even professional animal athletes are feeling the heat. Boxers, greyhounds and pitbulls (Ultimate Fighting Dogs) are all feeling the sting of intense scrutiny as state and federals officials consistently raid their homes on alleged abuses committed by their owners.
Substance Use:
Due to lazy pet owners a number of cats and dogs have become hooked on what should be used as only in terms of "recreational use." Catnip and Milk Bones abuse have skyrocketed since the last available stats were compiled in the 1840's.
Of the 41% of homeless animals who suffer from a substance abuse problem, less than half will receive proper treatment.
Litters Out of Wedlock:
Fatherless animal litters have skyrocketed since the 1980's. Many cats and dogs become pregnant due to a simple lack of birth control available to animals. Kitty condoms
