Strategies for coping with hair loss in women

Because hair loss in women is less common than hair loss in men, women affected by it may feel isolated. There are two frequent causes of significant hair loss in women: treatment of various diseases and hereditary loss.

With a temporary loss that is a side effect of treatment, probably the best thing to do is focus on the fact that it IS temporary. Wear it as a badge of courage. (Of course, wigs and head coverings are available as well, but it's been my experience in talking with cancer patients that most of them would rather just not bother.)

With a permanent loss, bolstering your self-esteem will probably help, as will having people in your life who tell you that you're beautiful just the way you are. I come from a family that has experienced both types of hair loss, and the emotional aspects seem to be the most significant. You may also want to meet with a color and/or wardrobe consultant who can give you tips for makeup and clothing that will help you look your best and increase your confidence.
