Asthma can be an uncomfortable, inconvenient, and sometimes dangerous chronic illness. Patients who use medications for asthma may also want to consider natural ways to reduce the severity and frequency of attacks.
Foods and supplements with anti-inflammatory properties can be beneficial to the asthma sufferer. Essential fatty acids, like Omega-3, can reduce inflammation (these can be taken in supplement form or found in fatty fish, like fresh-caught salmon). As red meats may encourage inflammation, it is best to get protein from plant products, like soy and nuts. Bright fruits and berries contain anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties - eating these foods over starchy grains can help to keep inflammation down.
Exercises, like yoga and meditation, that focus on the mind-body connection (as well as breathing) may also improve asthma conditions. These exercises make the practitioner more aware of his or her body and reduce stress. Some yoga positions are also very good for opening up the lungs. Simple yoga positions and relaxation poses have been successful at controlling asthma.
While using natural remedies combined with your prescribed medication may be the best option, healthy choices in diet and exercise can only have beneficial effects. The healthier a person is in general, the less he or she will suffer from chronic conditions like asthma!
