Nothing slights the reputation of a teacher more than unprofessional behavior, especially those who are new to the profession. Because their reputation is at stake, student teachers must understand their upcoming role in the public eye. They need to know that teachers are expected to conduct themselves appropriately at all times, even when they are not on campus. They serve as role models not only to students in the classroom, but also out in public. If student teachers are not willing to accept this challenge and maintain a professional image at all times, then they have surely chosen the wrong profession.
A student teacher is under the spotlight for administrators as a potential hire for a permanent teaching position. In order to beat the competition for a preferred teaching position, it is important to use with the best possible teaching and behavior management techniques during the time allotted for student teaching. It is equally important to adhere to the best ethical behaviors at all times. The impression made at this point is the most important step for breaking into the teaching profession.
The best way to get started is to pay very close attention to the pros. Find out who the best teachers are, and ask to sit in their classrooms to observe their teaching methods and the classroom management techniques they use. Take time to ask questions about their views on professionalism, and listen to what they have to say. Good teachers are usually the most willing to share their secrets because they take pride in what they do. The best teachers will also give the most useful information. Helpful tips from veteran teachers may include the following:
1.Be on time and be ready to begin class every day; preparation is key.
2.Dress appropriately and professionally. Adhere to campus dress codes.
3.Avoid excessive absenteeism. Students need you in the classroom as much as possible.
4.Maintain an appropriate relationship with students at all times.
5.Avoid workplace gossip.
6.Be a team player. Try your best to get along with colleagues. Choosing to help others over hurting others is a wise choice, and creates workplace harmony instead of animosity.
7.Leave your personal problems at home. School is a place for positive attitudes. A positive attitude creates a positive image.
8.Maintain a neat and orderly classroom.
9.Find behavior management techniques that work for you and use them consistently.
10.Be fair, firm and consistent, but not without a sense of humor.
11.Treat all students the same. Don't play favorites.
