Body image: Why do women try so hard?

I was watching 20/20 about the new 'hot' product that is sweeping Hollywood's female wardrobe: Spanx. A comfortable, breathable underwear that helps to lift, shape, and eliminate the panty line that is seen by the outer garment. The creator talked about her success, and the help-aid 'Spanx' she had created for women. She then introduced us to her new bust enhancing bra that eliminates the bulges that are created on the back and sides, and how it lifts and pushes your boobs together in order to create a busting cleavage without a look of sagging on the front, and back-fat near your shoulder blades. Most all the celebrities such as: Tyra Banks, Beyonce Knowles and Jessica Alba are using them.

As I continued to watch, I became discouraged at the fact that Doctors now-a-days are trying to teach mothers to avoid saying anything around their young daughters that may cause them to grow up being insecure about their body image, yet there are still people out their promoting everything to change what you 'truly' look like. But what is it all for? Why do women try so hard? Do we do it to feel better about ourselves because we're insecure, or perhaps to feel sexier, or maybe to look better then that hot chic your man keeps looking at across the room? Or do we try hard to enhance our image to attract some attention from others or maybe even our significant other because thats what keeps us going day by day? Maybe its because we live in such a competitive society that we need to compete to win 'who looks the best' in the office, or club, or fine dining restaurant, or even the red-carpet? I started even thinking that Doctors should save their breath! Because all women will have to face image-reality.

I started to look around the next day at men. Boy do they look ratty with a few exceptions! Everywhere I looked men were bald or going bald! They had the most inventive hair creations of how they cover the bald spots with a few hairs delicately combed over perhaps hoping that no one would notice their was only 4 strands of hair covering that very large bald spot. Furthermore most men were overweight, or were bright white screaming for a tan, nails dirtier than sludge, farts and burps galore, and smelling so bad that I didn't know when was the last time they had a nice hot shower. It seemed to me that most men don't care about body image and if they do they're gay! So if these men don't care about the way they look or present themselves in public, why
