How to write more a day

My advice for producing more writing per day is to have an accountability for how much you are going to write. For example, I'm participating in National Write a Novel Month this month. The goal is to reach 50,000 toward the first draft of a novel during the month of November. A friend invited me to partake in this experience and I find the accountability of having to report my daily word count and the pressure, if you will, of reaching that tally in thirty days has been an incredibly experience so far. After nine days, I find myself already at over thirty thousand words and I'm having a blast. I've had more ideas for other writing projects in these past nine days than I've had in the last year. Creativity begets more creativity and the reality of seeing characters actually get to the point in the project that they actually "do" things in my story rather than remain in my imagination is inspiring me to write like a fiend.

Also, I find myself noticing more details of my surroundings in my everyday experience now that I have the pressure of finishing a project and the added accountability of having a writing buddy to whom I must report a daily word count. I suggest a daily word count for anyone who wants to write, even if the daily word count be in a journal or blog. Having to log a certain number of words a day could have potentially crippling effects if a person takes him or herself too seriously with the quality of that writing. But, just remember that there is always time for revision and rewriting to polish the work.
