Poetry: Pregnancy

Bond of Blood and Breath

Your blood and breath sustain your life
And now they flow anew.
For every beating of your heart
There's someone taking two.

And as you're breathing in the air
That swirls around the room,
Another fills its little lungs
With liquid from the womb.

Your body is its perfect world;
The two of you are one.
But soon its lips will crave the breeze,
Its eyes will yearn for sun.

And when that moment comes to pass
You may feel loss within.
But take its little hands in yours
And kiss its rosy skin.

The beating of your hearts will prove
That birth is not a death.
The two of you will always share
A bond of blood and breath.
