The signs of lung disease may be subtle at first, then progressively worsen over time. One should be cognizant of any of the following signs:
An increase in the frequency of colds or flu-like symptoms.
Any increased shortness-of-breath during normal daily activity; especially while walking or climbing stairs. Be aware of any presence of wheezing. Development of a persistent cough, with or without congestion, should not be ignored.
Check you fingernails for any signs of cyanosis (pale-blue color), or the presence of finger nail clubbing, which means that the tips of the fingernails appear rounded and wrap around one's fingertips.
Examine your ankles for edema or swelling. If you notice swelling, apply mild pressure over the swollen area with you thumb. If your thumb leaves a depression, that it a sign of edema,
which could be due to a heart problem which is often accompanied by breathing problems.
You should make an appointment with a pulmonologist, or lung doctor, if any of these signs are evident.
Be more aware of these signs if you have any of the following risk factors for lung disease: A past smoking history; prolonged exposure to second-hand smoke at either work or at home second-hand smoke; or any past history of serious respiratory infections as pneumonia or acute bronchitis.
Lung disease can also be idiopathic, which means of unknown cause. Be in tune with your body, and don't ignore any of the signs listed above.
