Teacher tips: How to deal with student cell phones in the classroom

Cellular phones are a very convenient, yet they can be very disruptive at times.

Sometimes I wonder how people made it so long without them.

They are not only a problem with in the schools. Some people go as far as to carry theirs to Sunday service with them.

I must admit that I was totally against them for a few years. I just purchase one three months ago and will go in to panic mode if my battery goes down or I leave home without it.

The thought of being in a classroom full of student with cellular phones is very frightening. Hopefully there will be some type of rule implemented to update the school handbooks that would control this issue.

If not, you must establish some reasonable rules of your own in the classroom, such as:

1. Phones must be set on vibrate at all times during class.
2. Absolutely no talking on it during class instruction.

Most students on the secondary level have mastered the text messaging component. One reason is because texting is usually unlimited with no extras fees unlike talk time which can be quite expensive.

Elementary age students should not be allowed to bring cell phones to school at all. This age group is very easily distracted and a cell phone would not do anything to enhance their learning capabilities.
