Exploring the vampire in cinema

Vampire films are one of the only genre's in today's films which remain original. All the films with creatures like zombies and supernatural slashers and all just unofficial remakes of the classics. Films like "30 Days of Night" actually have their own unique twist. Vampires travel to Alaska during the one month of darkness. This is a brilliant concept, which surprisingly has never been used before.

We are also in a time where many films (mostly horror) are either remakes of classic films or adaptations of critically acclaimed novels that make the great summer blockbusters. Coming soon, starring Will Smith, is an adaptation to the great Richard Matheson novel: "I am Legend". Matheson's book "I am Legend" is known as one of the best vampire novels since "Dracula". A tale of a scientist doomed to be the last man on Earth along with an entire army of vampires. This film has been made three times before. First, starring the great Sci-Fi legend, Vincent Price, in the 1964 film titled: "The Last Man on Earth", of course. Second, 1967 as a foreign film called: "Soy Leyenda". Third, with another great Science Fiction legend, Charlton Heston, in 1971 known as: "The Omega Man".
The Vampire genre is a simple yet extremely creative category to adapt. Starting out with a simple set of rules that any man, woman, or child knows. Then, of course adapting and using your own "twist" and techniques. Such as the creators of "30 Days of Night" and the creators of "Shadow of the Vampire" both did. And after all this, a masterpiece is born. Using classic and modern techniques as one is the best approach for a Vampire film.
