America is obsessed with technology

The power of technology today is absolutely amazing. In a matter of a decade so much has changed. Technology has come a long way. We used to listen to vinyl records and cassette tapes, now we have compact discs or CDs. I am all for advanced technology that benefits society, however, I do have a problem where, yes, America is very much obsessed with it.

I do not have a problem with people who can afford to buy every new gadget that comes out if they feel the need to have it. I do feel that some things being sold are just ridiculous though. I mean is it really necessary to have a cell phone ringing off the hook all day long. Is it really necessary to have fifty different ring tones and text messaging psychics to find out who your true love is? I have had a cell phone before and I could not stand it. If I am out and you cannot get a hold of me then leave a message on my answering machine. I am out for a reason and I do not need twenty million people calling me just to ask me what I am doing. I feel that it is the rudest thing in this world as well. People being on their cell phones in movie theaters or even in malls. They get so wrapped up and they are speaking so loud that you can hear the entire conversation. Not only is that extremely annoying but it is very rude. There is not that much talking in the world. I can understand having a cell phone for emergency purposes but I think it is just ridiculous for an eight year old to have one. What does an eight year old need a cell phone for?

When I was growing up, I had strict parents. If I wasn't doing well in school, I did not get rewarded. Parents today just go out and buy all these expensive electronics for their children because all of their friends have it or just because it's the new thing to have. I believe there is a bit of a problem with that. Kids should be rewarded for doing well in school and if they want a Playstation or Nintendo Wii and you want to reward them with that for doing a good job then so be it. I firmly believe that parents should monitor and limit the time spent playing these games. I do not think it is healthy for a child to sit in front of a video game for hours on end ignoring his or her studies.

Today things are made way too easy because of technology. We don't even have to go to the post office anymore if we have access to a computer at home. It is useful and convenient for older people who are homebound, but really, how many older people have computers?

People wonder why children growing up today are obese and/or unhealthy. Why? Because things are made way too easy and children do not have the motivation to go outside and play. They would rather stay in and play video games all day long. In today's society it is understandable that you really cannot let your children outside to play the way we used to when we were younger because of the fear that your kids might get shot as an innocent bystander from a drive by shooting. That should not stop parents from playing games and doing exercise inside the home. There are many alternatives for those who live in these neighborhoods but most parents are just as lazy as their children. I truly believe that children live what they learn so if parents are being lazy, children will be too. I do not think that technology has anything to do with that.

Everybody is out to make money any way they can and that is fine. Most of this stuff people come out with though is just a bunch of junk, a waste of money and unnecessary. Certain things should just be left the way they were. Simple.
