Getting celebrity endorsements for your product might be a good idea in some instances. I don't think that in every instance that it works. I noticed that many of the sneaker commercials and underwear commercials have celebrities hawking them.
My issue with this is that I know that person was paid to say whatever it was they say in the advertisement. Why do people automatically assume that whatever they see on TV or hear on the radio, is true, at least when it comes to commercials.
I am a Keanu Reeves fan. I think the man is the epitome of gorgeousness. Would I buy a product just because he was a spokesperson for that company? No. I would not. It would depend on the situation.
On the other hand, if someone is not bent on learning, seeing a basketball star on a Nike commercial may induce them to buy that product. Personally, I think its silly to do that. However, some of the commercials are pretty good.
The ones that Hewlett Packard has with the hands are really interesting to me. They use celebrities. The newest one that I saw was one with Jerry Seinfeld. Those commercials don't really induce me to buy the product, but I am entertained. I remember those commercials, so maybe there really is an effect if you remember them.
I do not remember the myriad of sneaker commercials mostly because they are all the same. Some big guy running around sweating and playing a sport that I just don't care about just doesn't do anything for me.
Another thing I have seen lately is various stars of law series in commercials for financial firms. Has anyone noticed that is strange? An actor that is a lawyer, is on a commercial for etrade or pricewaterhouse or whatever it is. An actor. He's a good actor too, its just strange to me that for whatever reason, we feel like we trust him enough to sign up with that particular financial firm.
Next time you see a commercial like that, ask yourself, "Why would I use that product?" I am very curious as to your answers.
