Are you pondering what to give the Cub Scout in your home this holiday season? Well, if you're willing to think of out the box, here are a few suggestions, that I too will be following as I begin my holiday shopping this year.
The easiest starting off point would be going through their Tiger, Wolf, or Bear Cub Scout handbook and reviewing what achievements and electives still need to be completed in order for your son to earn a bead, badge or beltloop. For instance, let's say your Cub Scout needs to complete an elective based on Magic. There are numerous catalogs such as "Young Explorers" that feature a variety of gifts centered on magic. You could give them a gift of Gross Magic or Magic based on science. They also have a box of over 100 magic tricks at a reasonable price. Not only would they be receiving a unique gift that will not only be entertaining and educational, but they'd also complete a scout requirement too!
Perhaps you could borrow your Den Leaders' Academic and Sports book to peruse through to give you a better understanding of what topics might appeal to your son so that you can give a gift that will help them achieve a pin or beltloop in a category that hasn't been met yet. How about giving your son a gift of private lessons in a specialized sport or enrolling him on a team that won't conflict with his scouting duties? Does your child have an inclination for music? If so, have you considered giving him a musical instrument? They aren't as expensive as you might think and you can find them through mail order catalogs too. Even better let others help you out too, if you give your child an instrument for Christmas, perhaps another family member can give your child gift certificates for music lessons.
Last but not least, Scouting at all levels is about service to others and community. What better way to help your Cub Scout understand and embrace the true essence of the holiday spirit by providing a venue for your son to go the extra mile for others this holiday season. Do you have a favorite charity? How about your son? Perhaps the two of you could pick a charity together and either make a gift, donate new or used gifts, give the gift of time by helping out that charity, or by donating money in your child's name. Hopefully this article will help you with your gift ideas for your Cub Scout. Good luck!
