I can remember watching television shows as a little girl that showed perfect little families. The women always wore modest dresses, the men in suits, the children looking clean, and no cursing or yelling. Pre-marital sex was never mentioned and almost unheard of, except for the 'accidental' pregnancy. Usually, in those cases, the girls were sent away until their babies were born and then given up for adoption. Families always sat down at dinner to eat together and discuss their days. Television was a priviledge not to be abused, as most fathers and sons played ball outside, and mothers and daughters shopped or knitted together. Work was strictly 9-5, no one asking for overtime. Relationships were valued over material possessions, trust was more common and greater, marriages lasted, children respected their parents, and the idea of crime was horrendous.
Sadly, for me, this was only seen on television. I often wonder what it would have been like to not have to worry about locking your doors, or actually sitting down at the dinner table with your entire family for an hour, or the excitement and intensity of making love for the FIRST time on your wedding night! No, I grew up in an era of television, video games, ipods, cds', anything and everything to take the value OUT of relationships and placing it into THINGS. Sixteen year olds are laughed at for being virgins, if believed at all. I've actually heard of them being called "freaks of nature"! Look on any grocery store checkout rack and you will see the same idea over and over in the article titles, such as "21 Best Moves in Bed", or "How Many Dates Until It's OK to Have Sex", or "Should You Tell Your Lover How Many Partners You've Had?". I believe the people that grew up in the 20's or 30's that were suddenly thrown into today's world would probably have turned beet red with embarrassment by the lack of morality of today's society and then decided to live life in a cave! Now we have women who curse like sailors and men who give no thought to their vulgar comments around the women. I believe that what was once morals and good personal values have become extinct!
This is not to say that everyone is this way. The few, and I mean VERY few, who do carry these ancient morals are now usually outcasts of society, looked at as if they had a disease, the disease of morality. What was once so important has become a joke, and what was once rarely thought of, has become a priority. Meet with your family at dinnertime? Heck no! I've got to get ready to go out to the club so I can meet a guy for the night. Bring your date flowers? Why? They're such a waste of money, money that could be spent buying alcohol to get her drunk! Nobody trusts anybody anymore. And why should they? This is the shadiest era that I can ever remember reading about, and I'm living in it! It's almost like a nightmare, except for the fact that I am almost completely numb to it all! These are expectations, and there is no going back. We will never see an improvement in values. People are working more and more just to live, that it seems they forget they have a family they should be spending time with. People now live to work, whereas they used to work to live. And it's only going to get worse as time goes by. I'm sure if I was thrown into the year 2070 right now, I'd be looking for the closest and deepest cave around.
