When we were 20, we took it all for granted, especially our health. We stayed up all night, we drank ourselves silly, we smoked like chimneys, we ate entire pizzas. Okay, maybe we weren't all this irresponsible. But even those of us who were more careful with our health slowly began to notice that things were beginning to change as we approached 30. Sure, we may get a clean bill of health from the doctor. But now those all nighters take a little longer to recover from. And it seems that even when we aren't being so hard on our bodies, we just don't have the energy that we used to. We're just plain sluggish and our youthful firmness is gradually becoming middle aged softness. It could be just natural aging, or maybe we're beginning to accumulate a toxic overload.
What is toxic overload? It is excessive internal pollution. In the same way that we suffer when walk out the door on a smoggy day, our cells don't do well when they can't breathe. The body has a natural cleansing and sewage system. But if we fill it with more garbage than it can haul away, the systems back up. Things like preservatives, pesticides in our food, processed food, sugar, large amounts of meat that digest very slowly, and environmental poisons overwhelm the body.
So what's the cure? Acupuncture and a body detox may be the solution to what ails us. The World Health Organization, in its 1979 report "Viewpoint on Acupuncture" lists more than 40 conditions for which acupuncture would be an appropriate treatment. Funny thing about that list is that it shares a lot in common with lists given by holistic health practitioners for the symptoms common to toxic overload. Let's see how the lists compare. Dr. Maoshing Ni in his article "Why You Need to Spring Clean Your Body" provides the first list. The second list is from the WHO.
