The characteristics of a good person are extremely hard to define. Do we go by religious upbringing and morals? Do we go by society's standards of what makes a good person? Do we go our own personal standards of what makes a good person, when most of us believe that we too, are good people? It's really hard to define the characteristics of a good person in one simple article, or through one conversation. I would venture to guess that almost everyone has a differing opinion as to what the characteristics of a good person are, and could spend hours debating that with others.

Do we generalize as to what the characteristics of a good person are? Or do we go into detail about each and every thing that makes up a good person? A person can be the most respected and "well-off" member of a community, and have the most horrible of skeletons in his/her closet. So, you can't judge whether a person is good or not based on money, influence, their standing in the community, political affiliations, religious affiliations, etc.

In my opinion, the characteristics of a good person have to do with their moral standards, their empathy and caring for others, how they live on a day to day basis, and whether or not they are loyal, trustworthy and honest.

Moral standards are a huge part of what makes a good person. But do we judge by society's "norms" for moral standards or do we go by religious moral standards? That's a tough question, and one that each individual must answer for themselves. A person's morals and standards by which they live are a good indicator (usually!) of whether or not they are a good person. But be careful when judging them based on moral standards. Do they actually LIVE what they say? Or do they give lip service and live an entirely different way than their claimed moral standards are?

Empathy and a caring for others is another characteristic of a good person. Does that person care about you or others? Do they show that they have the capacity to show empathy or sympathy for others and their feelings? A good person has an empathy and caring for others, in any situation, and doesn't judge someone else. Empathy and caring are quickly growing obsolete in this world of ours, and I really think that's sad. As the world gets harsher, and people forget what it's like to show empathy or caring, we lose our humanity.
