Why soap opera fans are willing to believe the unbelievable

I do not believe that soap opera fans necessarily believe the unbelievable as much as they enjoy the unbelievable. A lot of the best things in life are unbelievable. Anybody with an active imagination knows that. Many of people's daydreams are unbelievable, and they know it, but that does not stop them from enjoying them. Soap opera fans are not stupid. They are average people, who are intelligent and have common sense. They know the difference between real and make believe. They just seem to have a better understanding of how to enjoy the make believe part than those who criticize their love of soap operas. I mean, if I watch and enjoy Smallville, it does not mean I believe there is an alien from the planet Krypton with superpowers running around saving the day by leaping tall buildings in a single bound. Yes, within the bounds of that show I do believe Clark Kent is capable of those types of feats for the sake of being able to enjoy watching it, because the rules of that world have been laid out before me and adhered to by its inhabitants.

All I am trying to say is that soap opera fans are not so much willing to believe the unbelievable as they are able to accept unbelievable actions within the constraints of a fictional universe. The unbelievable is very feasible when it is presented with care and intelligence, and a believability within the bounds of its world as opposed to ours.
