No matter where you are in the course of a day, you are bound to run into at least one or two rude people. Your entire day can be thrown off depending on when, where and how long you have to endure their presence.

There are two kinds of rude people...

* those who are just plain rude all the time and don't care who they hurt
* those who have an occasional bad day and feel remorseful for their behavior

The latter are those who, when the stress builds, need an outlet to explode. You simply were in the line of fire at the wrong moment. It isn't fair, but it could have been anyone! Their intentions aren't to hurt.

A person who is rude all the time doesn't hate you. They hate themselves. They possess unresolved issues and pain that causes them to transfer their anger onto others. You cannot fix them, but you don't have to allow their behavior to affect your well-being.

When encountering someone's rudeness, try not to take it personally. If they are just rude by nature, it's a reflection of them. They own their behavior. It's nothing you have done to cause their angry outburst. Instead of reacting, be silent. Silence gives time to think about what they've done and hopefully dissipate further assault. If you are able, walk away and forget the incident. Don't allow their bad manners and rude attitude to affect your day. Do not let their comments dictate your feelings or emotions.

Sometimes, you feel like snapping back, but why reduce yourself to their level?

If it's a case where someone is just having a bad day, try to be understanding of their situation. Offer empathy, as we all have bad days. They may end up feeling worse than you do, by their own behavior and possibly apologize for it later. Sometimes people are rude unknowingly. They might think their opinions or comments were given in a helpful manner, but from your vantage point, it resounded rude and unthoughtful. Why throw fuel on the fire by being rude in return? We all have a difference of opinion and what they think is correct, doesn't necessarily make it so. Go by your own judgment and instincts and disregard their comments.

Often, the rude person can be a store employee. You may feel as though you never want to shop there again because of that one employee. Or, the customer may be the rude and offensive party. In either case, their presence is limited to only a few moments, so it's probably best to let it roll off your back. Store employees often encounter many offensive and rude customers throughout their shift.
