Why people get sucked into soap operas

Soap operas suck people in because they never end! With endless romantic fantasies, dangerous adventures and unbelievable plots that keep you glued to your seat soaps just keep going. Not held captive by the same guidelines as prime time television, soap operas never go into rerun season. While you may see a repetitive theme every now and again you will never see the same episode twice. Every day brings a fresh glimpse into the lives of your new 'family and friends'.

Most people get their first taste of daytime drama when they're too young to know what they're watching. Generations of mothers have spent their afternoons first listening, and now watching their 'stories' with children playing nearby. Almost everyone has a story about what their mother/grandmother/older sister watched when they were little and to this day the theme song of that show can bring back a bit of their childhood.

From the plausible to the completely ridiculous storyline, soaps suck us in. Whether it's relating to what's happening, fantasizing about it or even just watching, wide-eyed at the unbelievable things these people are doing - you get sucked in. With every day bringing a new take on the story or introducing another one to follow you just have to see what happens next.

Eventually you become attached to certain characters and that's where the real fans are born. Good characters stand the test of time, ridiculous plots, bad writing, wrong relationships and cast changes. We root for them to win and cry when they lose. We stick by them through the back burner storylines and rejoice when they're in front again.

Soap operas take you into an alternate reality. It looks like our planet and they look like real people but the things they do are incredible. We can live vicariously through any character on the screen and know that they will be there the next day and the day after that. It's a little escape into another world. Something to entertain us while we fold laundry or put away dishes. Something to remind us that sometimes a life without baby switching isn't so bad after all.
