Teenagers insist on their own room decor. They are just waiting for the go ahead from mom and dad so they can prove how individualistic they really are. What parents can do is tell them where they have choices. These can be in the color of the walls, the type of curtains or drapes, the bedding and allow them to decorate their walls as they wish.
There will, of course, be areas that you as parents must say no to, such as new furniture. (The furniture is perfectly good and you cannot afford to discard it), or to anything that is totally outrageous or immoral in content. No naked pictures on the walls or any other items that you do not think your teen should have.
But give them plenty of room to be creative. If you teen-aged child fancies herself a future actress, her room may be reminiscent of a backstage dressing room. I see nothing wrong with that; within limits of course. If, on the other hand, the teenager is wild about football although didn't make the team, it is perfectly all right to allow him to have a football theme to his bedroom.
The idea is to allow these impressionistic individuals some room to discover who they are; with mom and dad watching carefully from the sidelines, of course, but not within their view. Maybe you don't like the colors but it is their room and if it pleases them it certainly should please you.
Maybe your future ballet star is determined to paint her walls a light purple with pink trim and insists on a wall free of anything except a bar where she can practice. Sound to me like a good ideas as long as she knows she must also sleep and do home work in the same room.
Other ideas is to have an underwater theme as if one is living in a fish bowl. This could appeal to a teenager who is fascinated with scuba diving and who likes to spend all available time at this sport. The wall will have to be a bluish green and wall paper supporting the theme or murals would be excellent.
Draped over chairs and table will be lots of netting and seaweed in vases, and a tank full of real creatures from the deep will help pull this ocean scene together. It will need to be carefully thought through but this seems like an excellent idea for a themed room.
Other ideas for a themed room could be a Disney theme but teenagers have usually outgrown this area. Probably the best thing to do where themed rooms for teenagers are concerned is to let them decide. Within reason, of course.
