How long to ponies live? Forever - if you ask any of us who have met those seemingly ancient ponies, who no longer have all of their teeth, and still act like naughty yearlings! Ponies, of course, don't really live forever, but they can live to a ripe old age if properly cared for throughout their lives.
Domestic horses, have an average life span of 25 to 30 years. However, for whatever reason nature has intended, ponies seem to live longer than their full sized counter parts. I've known a lot of ponies with plenty of spunk, well into their 30's and 40's, and knew one pony, who lived well past 50! While it's rare that a horse or pony will live that long, the more we learn and advance, the longer our animals seem to live.
For a pony to live a long life, they should get the best care possible. Regular care from the vet, good quality feed, and the right environment can help a pony live to a ripe old age. Ponies are known for being pretty hardy animals; but that shouldn't exclude them from the normal care any other equine would receive. Ponies, like horses, need regular visits from the farrier, normal vaccinations, need coggins drawn, their teeth floated, and need the vet when they are injured or sick. The better you care for your pony, the better chance it has of living a long life.
