The health benefits of lemons

Most of us recognize lemons as a tart and sour fruit which we use to accent foods or beverages. Do you know the lemon is not only great for culinary purposes, but it possesses many health benefits too?

The lemon tree has a long history. This tree, which belongs to the family of citrus trees, found its origin in Central Asia and can now be found in all the continents of the world. We know the lemon as a yellow kind of fruit, but when they are unripe and not ready for consumption the color is green. You can better wait until they are yellow to enjoy all their health benefits. We can't imagine a kitchen without lemons because it gives a delicious taste on some dishes if you add a little bit when you prepare the food. Lemons are also used to make some lemonade or for mixing them in some other drinks.

It is not difficult to understand lemons contain so many health benefits if you know that they are rich in vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. All these nutrients give a high protection against many kinds of infection and even cancer.

In Roman times a lemon was considered to have healing powers and was used to cure almost everything and also eliminated poison or toxin in your body. The taste of lemons is acidic and it is best you mix it with hot water for curing some digestion problems. Its healing powers also benefits to cure nausea, heartburn, constipation and worm infestations.

When you add water with a few lemons the drink is called "lemon juice". This is a very effective drink when you drink it in the morning and acts like a tonic for the liver which prevents digestion problems. It has been proved by some tests that lemon juice destroys the bacteria in malaria, cholera, diphtheria and some other diseases. It also tempers high fever, relieves symptoms of asthma and sore throat and is effective in wound healing.

The diuretic power of lemons helps people with urinary tract infections and high uric acid problems like arthritis and rheumatism. Relieving of kidney problems and preventing gallstones are symptoms which prove the efficiency of this yellow fruit.
The high proportion of potassium in lemons is very useful to prevent some heart diseases. If you stay up with headache or you don't feel very well, drink a glass of lemon juice and maybe you can avoid a visit to your doctor.

Lemons are a kind of fruit which is beneficial to everyone and can prevent a great number of diseases. Don't expect that lemons will cure every disease but adding them to your diet it is a great help to improve your health.
