My objection to JK Rowling's decision to make this announcement isn't an issue with homosexuality. It is an issue with an author changing a character after the series has been completed and published. Rowling at no point during the series indicated the sexual orientation of any character. If Rowling's intention was to create a gay character then she should have revealed the fact in the books. Some people argue that she is within her rights to adapt the characters as she deems necessary since they are indeed her creations. I agree with that concept; however, I believe that right is limited to adaptations made prior to final publication. Sexual orientation is merely a detail in regards to the character, but details cannot be altered once they are finalized. Changing sexual orientation is similar to changing a character's height, eye color, or any other physical description after you have already established the parameters of those details. For example, what if Rowling made an announcement that Harry Potter had blond hair and did not wear glasses instead of the announcement that Dumbledore is gay? Obviously, she could not make any such announcement because his appearance was already established in the first book! Is this not the same situation with Dumbledore? Weren't his parameters established already? Yes, of course they were. My protest to Rowling's announcement is strictly on the basis that an established character cannot be altered in the way Dumbledore has been altered.
